Are you worried about your financial future?

Redundancy isn’t easy, but it can bring you new opportunities. We are here to help you navigate the way ahead as you consider your options. Whether you’re looking at retirement or preparing for a new chapter in life, we’ve done it all before. Having spent over a decade servicing hundreds of Qantas staff – including redundancy packages – we are well equipped to help.

Voluntary Redundancy – Top Ten Tips
From our QF Redundancy experience over the past 16 years, these are our top 10 considerations for Qantas staff when considering if a Voluntary Redundancy (VR) is right for you:
1. Your preference (read more...)
2. Your age (read more...)
3. The numbers (read more...)
4. Timing your exit (read more...)
5. Cashflow planning (read more...)
6. Retirement planning (read more...)
7. Check the final payment (read more...)
8. Payroll deductions & Housekeeping (read more...)
9. Celebrate your decision (read more)
10. Don’t do this alone (read more...)
1. Your preference (read more...)

Your preference – to take or not to take that is the question! Are you mentally ready to disconnect from QF? Do you have a plan for the next chapter? Staff that leave Qantas employment prematurely often struggle with moving forward even if they are financially sound.

2. Your age (read more...)

Your Age – age impacts the tax treatment of the redundancy payment and also the opportunity for future employment prospects.

3. The numbers (read more...)

Do the numbers stack up for you? Are you financially ready to depart Qantas? Do you have enough money to retire?  These considerations need a professional’s help to run the numbers, do some projections and ask further important questions.

4. Timing your exit (read more...)

Timing your exit – if departure flexibility is available in your department, there may be tax and other benefits available by timing your departure date.

5. Cashflow planning (read more...)

If you plan to continue working, assume the worst case scenario. Plan how long your redundancy money can last and make spending adjustments accordingly until new employment is found. Complete a spending summary or budget planner.  Centrelink provides assistance if you are seeking new employment. Generally income support is not available for a certain period after receiving a redundancy payment. This link will help you understand what Centrelink has on offer for you on retrenchment and redundancy.

6. Retirement planning (read more...)

Retirement planning – If you are considering taking the package and moving into permanent retirement there are some key financial planning considerations to go through. Financial advice with a professional financial advisor is critical if you are considering retirement and want your income to seamlessly continue.

7. Check the final payment (read more...)

Check the final payment to ensure that the final redundancy statement and tax withheld is correct and corresponds to the redundancy payments made into your bank account.

8. Payroll deductions & Housekeeping (read more...)

Redirect any payroll auto deductions to credit card or your bank account. Complete your exit interview with Qantas. Consider your options with your super now that you are no longer an employee of Qantas. Take a photo of your Qantas ID before handing it in at your exit interview, for interline travel purposes. Check on your staff travel entitlements (LSL trips, stages available & expiry date) & make any final changes to your nominated travel companion. Consider whether you would like a retiree Qantas ID for future travel discounts and arrange before handing in your QF ID.  Followup Qantas payroll for your final redundancy statement.  FinaL PAYG Summary statement at the EOFY for your accountant if retiring.

9. Celebrate your decision (read more)

Celebrate your decision – if, after extensive consideration, you decide to take the VR, celebrate the end of an era and the beginning of your new life’s chapter with colleagues and friends. The exit interview day with Qantas is a perfect day to get together with others after you hand in your ID, uniform and depart Qantas for the last time. There is actually a huge psychological benefit in taking this step.

10. Don’t do this alone (read more...)

Don’t do this alone – Taking a VR package is a huge decision both financially and mentally. Having someone trusted, skilled and experienced to talk through questions and concerns you have is critical and worth the time and effort. Get good sleep, keep exercising and above all don’t let this stress you out. Everything can be worked out.

Compulsory Redundancy
If you are facing a Compulsory Redundancy (CR) you will not have the opportunity to be in control of the decisions and this can make the process much harder for you to handle on an emotional and practical level. A trusted advice partner becomes extremely important in this case to map things out for you and to guide you gently into your next chapter of life which has been forced upon you abruptly. You can and you will thrive if you make good, considered decisions.

``My redundancy in 2015 was a difficult time for me. Chrysalis helped me to make good decisions around reducing my tax as I was turning 55. Phil and his team also helped put my Qantas super into a pension. I’m very happy with all they do, they have a lot of integrity.``

``It was the right time for me to take a redundancy. Phil was already doing our finances so it was a simple decision to have him help me understand and manage my redundancy package. For my husband and I we anticipated our redundancy coming and so worked it into our lives. We’re really pleased with Chrysalis and often recommend Phil to people``.

``For me redundancy was an early retirement. After 36 years with Qantas it was time to shut one door and open another. At the time I knew Phil from my flying days and was thrilled he was doing financial planning now. Phil explained everything clearly and has always been professional and sincere. Now he’s been doing my finances for 17 or 18 years. I trust Phil and his Chrysalis team.``
